the opening in the center of the iris of the eye which looks like a black spot. It is circular in human beings and most vertebrates. The pupil, which is the only place where light can enter the eye, expands and contracts, thus controlling the amount of light that strikes the retina. »

The diameter of the pupil is changed automatically by the expansion or contraction of the iris (Shortley and Williams).
